Why are we spending so many days around town when we could be out killing stuff? Well, there is a reason for it, actually many reasons can keep you in town.
Recuperating: Sometimes injuries, disease or poison can keep you down for days.
Crafting: Weapons, armor, or magic items can keep you in town for quite some time depending on what it is you are crafting.
Practicing a Profession: Perhaps your character would like to work his profession for a time. Maybe he/she is required by a guild you are part of, to work your profession so many days a month/year to keep your good standing in the guild.
Research: Getting information does not always get done in the darkness of a cave but needs to be done in the local library or Inn.
Training: Those levels don't just come by running around doing the same thing you always have, it comes from learning new things and training with someone that knows more than you.
So does all this have to be roleplayed out? Most times they will not be played out, the time passes and maybe some general description is all that is needed.
Is there a cost to all this? Yes, it is possible that it will cost you to do some or all of these things.
Lifestyle Costs: Modest: 1gp, Comfortable: 2gp, Wealthy: 4gp
Crafting cost & time: With the proper proficiencies you can craft any non magical item. It takes one day to craft 5gp worth of market value of items and you will have to expend raw materials worth half the cost. Example: a suit of plate armor (market value 1500gp) takes 300 days and will cost you 750gp.
Practicing a Profession: Should actually make you gold depending on your profession.
Researching: Researching non magical information will cost you at least 1gp in addition to your lifestyle cost.
Training: The training can last up to 250 days at a cost of 1gp per day in addition to your lifestyle cost. This will depend on what it is your trying to learn or what level you are trying to gain.
SIDE NOTE FROM DM/DAN: If you RP between sessions, or ask me to RP your character for some end result, it will make the book that much more interesting!
