Damakos returns to Rangio on Aug 22 in the late evening. He splits off from the Royal Guard and Umbra thanking them for the escort back. He returns the horse to the stables and shows up at the Northern Inn just after midnight.
As he enters the Inn all is quiet and the only one he sees is Kimberly tending the Inn.
Damakos slightly bows his head in her direction, "Good evening M'lady, an ale if you please"
She pours him a mug of ale and sets it on the bar, "Good eve, late night to be drinking, Did you require something to eat or a room to stay?"
Damakos shakes his head, "No, no this will be all I just wait on the arrival of others."
She smiles, "Just like you, never at rest, always on the go. Must be something with all the whispers going on about."
He takes the ale and drops a few coins on the bar, "Careful lady Kimberly, whispers turn to talk and talk, well we know that can turn to danger."
She continues to smile, "Only if it is repeated"
He turns and walks to the back table and sits, pulling a book from his pack and starts to read. Waiting on any who might show up, though he has his doubts that any will show.
In walks Bi'rel, pulls back her cloak. She sees Damakos, walks up to his table and says, "I thought I was the only one that has trouble sleeping" She orders a juice, sits down at Damakos table, pulls out her own book and begins to read.
Johan walks in and orders a an ale. Receiving it, he turns to Damakos and nods. He walks over to Bi'rel, "May I sit?”
Bi'rel says, "Absolutely." And goes back to reading Stormwalk Firehammers "The Search for the Truth"
Johan sees the book Bi'rel is reading, "Interesting choice in books, what draws you to this particular author?"
Bi'rel closes the book slowly and looks at Damakos, remembering what the mysterious man told her, that Damakos accepts true knowledge in any form, she decides to answer. She says, "The Teifling Tribes that destroyed the human settlements has always been a hobby, Elroy recommended this book when I first arrived here, and with the down time, I decided it was a good time to read it." She says to Johan, "It is some of the most rational and believable book from ancient history I have found, have you read any of it?”
Johan "I have. I enjoy reading about history, fact or not, I like to keep an open mind to all possibilities.”
Bi'rel gets a contemplating look on her face and says, "Interesting I prefer to know the whole truth, the real workings. It is hard because the winner always writes the books but thankfully, enough books from all sides emerge, and if you piece them together, you usual get a canvas of the truth.”
Johan "Oh, don't get me wrong, I seek truth, but one cannot turn from the allure of possibility. With fact, what more reason do you have to question? I prefer, actually, a mixture of fact and fiction, allows for a little more adventure, wouldn't you say?”
Intrigued by the prospect, Bi'rel says,"You would rather be entertained than have the truth, that seems so mundane. Too many people just fear what they don't know instead of trying to understand it.
Johan "Why must life be so bland. Why can I not be entertained by the truth, or something I want to be true.”
Bi'rel reaches into her bag and pulls out a copy of "The Long History of Here, There and Beyond" by Withnel Randolph and hands it to Johan, and calmly says," Here you go than, this bit of dribble might be more what you are looking for.”
Johan places his hand on the book, looking at the cover..."I have perused this volume before, again, not a complete read, but intriguing nonetheless.”
Johan "Tell me, is all you read history, is there nothing else that can tempt your mind?”
Bi'rel gets a sheepish grin, moves in closer to Johan and says in a very melodic soft voice and says, "Do you have an idea of something that would peak my interest?”
Johan "Since fiction doesn't seem to...light your fire, how about something I call Details and Deceptions.”
Bi'rel sits back down and giggles. "That is the problem with fiction, too easily men make fiction their believed reality." She looks at Johan, a gloss look over her eyes, "Pure unadulterated truth, that is what makes reality, and is the ultimate aphrodisiac. Knowledge more than gold or wealth is the only true currency that drives this world."
She leans over and says, "Though I do owe you one." And lightly kisses Johan's cheek, which is unusually warm and says, "You have potential Johan, maybe if you make an effort to gather the truth, you will have all the wealth you need.”
After a pause, Johan Sips his drink and says "In another life, the truth..." Johan sips again from his drink, obviously stalling, "the truth is a sore subject.”
Bi'rel seems intrigued, "Johan, being a student of truth I can tell something is on your mind, if you do not plainly ask the questions you have, you will never have the answers you seek." She thinks for a second and says, "Ask Johan, if I have the answer, maybe I can help you find what you seek. Maybe the truth you think you have is not the complete truth.”
Johan "My Brothers, Gunther and Leopold, my friends, and ....myself, dead because of the power I could not control. Yet here I am, another life. What truth lies behind that?”
Bi'rel seems lost in thought for only a moment. Just when it looked like she was not going to speak, she softly said, "This is exactly what I speak of, power without true control," she raises her right hand and small bluish hew flames dance upon her fingers. She stares into the flames but continues speaking,"is a fiction one makes reality in the thought they can control it. But real control,"the flames stop dancing but become bigger and brighter but without heat,"is when one finds themselves searching for true wisdom, actual truth would understand they did not have the control they had convinced themselves they had." The flames again become small and dance, changing colors within Bi'rel's beautiful fingers, she continues, "The truth is that you in your infancy of understanding, did not realize you knew nothing, and without that desire to seek actual truth," she closes her hand and the flames disappear, she opens her hand and wiggles her fingers showing that the flames have disappeared, looking back at Johan she says, "That's the truth you cannot accept, once you have acceptance, you must forgive yourself any feelings you have of the situation, through forgiveness comes understanding, and personal understanding, well as a wise man once said, 'To understand ones self is to leave one with the knowledge of the universe.'" She smiles looking at Johan and says, "The questions you have are not the ones you ask, but the ones you are afraid to ask.”
Johan looks to Bi'rel, then to the innkeeper and signals for another drink. "These scars are a constant reminder of my choices. My life, a constant reminder that I am here, and my brothers are not.”
Bi'rel maintains her smile and says,"Yes you are, yet you need to learn. You were saved, for what purpose only the gods know, and maybe you do, but," she she lightly touched the scares she can see, and says, "if you do not learn the truth, than the lesson the gods have for you are lost." She picks up her book and says as she opens to where she left off, "If you fail to understand that the purpose of you being here now, past the events that made that happen, than you will never have real truth behind your friends and brothers losing their lives.”
Johan "Why have I been returned here, why have I been given a second chance" he says as he takes another drink.
Johan touches Bi'rel's arm, "Thank you for your council, and your company. I will leave you to your reading.”
Bi'rel smiles without looking up, "I am here if you need me Johan." And continues reading.
Leza enters the inn after his conversation with Balsar and notices the group.
"Greetings. May I join you?" he asks.
Absentmindedly, Johan thumbs the ring on his left hand, staring into his cup. "Hello Leza, please, be seated.”
Bi'rel places the book down and smiles, "Leza, how good to see you." She says seemingly excited, "How have you been?”
"Thank you," LEza says as he takes a seat.
"So, what is everyone up to this fine evening?”
Bi'rel says, "Learning truths and waiting on the others.”
Leza notices the book Bi'rel is reading.
Leza "What are you reading?”
Bi’rel holds up the book to show Leza the cover which reads, "Stormwalk Firehammers 'The Search for the Truth’"
Leza "I don't think I've heard of that one. Then again, I haven't had much time for reading…"
Bi'rel smiles and says, "With all this downtime this last week, I'm surprised." She thinks for a moment, "I believe," she adds, "there is a copy left at the bookstore when they open.”
Damakos closes his book and quickly puts it away, "Glad you all made it, I assume the others are not interested in joining us?”
Leza "My brother Horus will be joining us. That is the only person I am sure of. I have just come from a conversation with Balsar. I hope he decides to come.”
Morthos quietly enters the inn, moves to the bar and requests an ale from the inn keeper. Looking toward the group, he cautiously approaches, warily keeping his eye on Bi'rel. Speaking to the group as a whole,"May I join you?”
Leza looks toward Morthos.
"Please, join us.”
Damakos "Well we will give them some time and see if they show" Nods to Morthos, “Welcome"
Morthos briefly inclines his head towards Liza, "Thanks" and sits at the corner of the bar, facing the rest and takes a long drink. He takes the time to briefly study Damakos. An uneasy wave slithers through Morthos every time he lays eyes on him, but refrains from dwelling on it, chalking it up to how little he knows of this man, but something continues to nag at the back of his mind without being able to pin it down. He mutters under his breath, " More meditation, I guess”
Balsar walks in and studies the inn, he see's the group he is here to meet with and walks over to them. "Good evening, may I have a seat?”
Bi'rel shoots Balsar a smile and says, "The more the merrier." With that telltale giggle she had when they all first met.
Balsar "Thank you, are we still waiting on the others?" He then takes his seat at the table
Johan nods to Balsar, and takes a drink.
Johan looks at Balsar, none of the emotion from the conversation with Bi'rel on his face or in his voice, "Have you mad your choice?”
Morthos makes brief eyecontact with Balsar nods in greeting and returns to his drink.
Balsar will nod back to Morthos and then turn his attention back to Johan, "you will all know soon. There is a lot ridding on this meeting.”
Horus enters the inn.
"Sorry I am late. I was checking on the status of my new sword. What have I missed? Is everyone ready to set out for the tower again?”
Looks at Horus "good evening" looks to the rest of the party "shall we begin?"
Damakos looks around the table, "perhaps the others are not interested in joining, I will only take a few moments of your time." He stops and seems to be choosing his words. "Seems we got off on the wrong foot, sometimes I am not myself and that can be unfortunate, though I believe I showed that I meant no harm, other than the one’s who attacked me and unfortunately those that got caught in the line of fire I tried to help you when your little friend attacked you." He looks to Bi'rel "We all fight our own....Demons at some point. As I said there is but one item that I will recover, anything else you all can fight over."
"I could use you as much as you could use me to be successful in our quest." he stands, "if there is nothing else I shall be at the southern gate at high sun for those that wish to join me." He waits a second for anyone's reply.
Johan raises a glass to Damakos, "Midday it is.”
Balsar stands up and says "Damakos, I have some questions for you”
Damakos looks to Balsar, "Yes, how can I help?”
Balsar "Now that we have all had time to somewhat calm down, how do you know of our adventure in the nightmare tower?”
Johan looks dissapointed at his once again empty cup and signals for another to be brought over.
Morthos signals for a refil as well and refocusses his attention on Damakos.
Damakos looks to Balsar, "I had seen you all, as you were told, be prepared. Do you think I would not prepare myself?”
"You saw us and know what happened yet you kept your distance and watched. You watched as we lost a friend and now expect us to help you and go back in. How do we know you won't do it again? How do we know you aren't just setting us up?”
Bi'rel starts to look offended, "The Druids watch as well, do you also blame them for our mistakes?"
Damakos Sounding a little agitated, "You believe it was my obligation to help you? You went there of your own choice, it was your place to help those you went with, not mine. You left your friend not I! I expect nothing from you, if you chose to let evil grow that is between you and your god not me. I shall return with or without you.”
Balsar "I don't believe it was your obligation but it's also not our obligation to help you. You want our help yet you have done nothing to help us.”
Balsar motions to the women for another drink
Looks Balsar right in the eye, "You are trying my patience, maybe you are correct I think your two friends were doing very well against Bi'rel here. One was laying down dying while the other was soon to follow, while most of you stood there. You are right your not obligated and as well as you helped your friends perhaps the best way you could help me is by staying right here in Rangio.”
Balsar "We have never fought amongst ourselves until you showed up. I was right there helping trying to calm Bi'rel down!”
Damakos nods, "So it is my own fault that you approached me on the road, very well I will take responsibility for sitting on the side of the road and yes I do understand why a big fellow like you could not subdue such a beastly lady like her. Please do your friends a favor and try not to subdue any other creatures with your harsh words. I would guess while they are dying they would much rather you use your sword to defend them but who am I to talk for them.”
Balsar Seeing the anger in Damakos "look I'm not trying be rude, my friends are important and as you can tell, I care very much for them. I will die trying to protect them. We are getting nowhere with this. What is it you are looking for in that hellish tower?"
"I seen how you protect them, and please don't protect me...if you must know, a tome that belongs to me...and before you ask you would not even begin to understand nor would I be able to explain to you the context of it. Just as I would never understand how any creature would be willing to swear their life to a god and swear to protect all and ask nothing in return. But then..I don't question why one would.”
Balsar sits back in his chair looking at everyone. He tries to calm himself to no avail. He grabs his beer and chugs what's left. He looks down at his empty mug for a moment and then proceeds to slam the mug on the table as he stands at the same time. The chair goes flying back and slams the wall. He looks Damakos straight in the eyes "I don't trust you in the least and I could careless about your damn tome. I will go but at no point is this for you or anything you have said. I am going for them! I have my eye on you Damakos, you better not let them down"
Still extremely aggravated and turns to everyone "and don't any of you question my faith again"
He leaves the table and walks to the waitress "I'm sorry I lost my composure" he hands her some gold "buy yourself a drink on me and give them another round." He makes his way out of the common area to retire to his quarters
Damakos in a clam voice says as Balsar walks away, "sleep well my friend" He turns to Bi'rel, "did you care to have that word now?”
Bi'rel says, "Yes Please.”
Damakos "do you care to walk or stay here?"
Bi'rel says, "I would like to walk and talk please.”
Damakos nods and gestures toward the door, "very well, walk we shall”
Bi'rel follows Damakos out the door, As they get a good distance away, Bi'rel says to Damakos,"Away from the others I wanted to say, thank you for what you did to stop me, few others would have the courage.”
Damakos "I was not planning it to go that way but I didn't want to see you all kill each other either. You are welcome M'lady." He looks around. "are you worried ears follow?”
Bi'rel looks a little embarrassed, "Ears are everywhere, as I recently learned from a very mysterious halfling. No I more wanted to tell you this as personally as I could, and there is nothing more personal than face to face." Bi'rel looks up at the trees and sky, "Especially a tranquil night such as this.”
Damakos nods, "Halflings are often mysterious, but then again so is life. With all the happenings around here I doubt there is not a place in town that there are not ears.”
Bi'rel says, "Thank you again, for your time and what you did." And she begins to walk away, seemingly lost in thought and talking in very low tones to herself as her melodic voice echoes in the annunciations.
Damakos watches as she walks away, "Your welcome M'lady" he stands there in thought for a second, taps his staff on the ground, mumbles something and vanishes.
Morthos finally catches sight of Bi'rell and Damakos having followed from some distance so as not to intrude. As he is about to call out to Damakos he vanishes, Morthos sighs, "Well maybe I'll ask him when I run into him again."
