This event takes place on the second day they were in Rangio, the day after the group falls apart in Elroys House.
In the morning, when Leza, Greyhammer, and Balsar are waking up, each notices a note slipped under the door. No envelope, simply a scrap of parchment that reads:
I have something I wish to say to you all, join me this evening at the Inn, and we may find a more private meeting place.
-Johan Eberhart
Balsar wakes up as the sun just starts to rise over the horizon. He has a big day planned. He gets out of bed and notices the note. He picks it up and reads it, nods his head and leaves it on the nightstand by Greyhammer still sleeping peacefully. He grabs his hunting gear and heads into the woods to go hunting. He will meet at the Inn in the evening, but first it is time for the hunt.
Leza acknowledges the note and goes out to meet Horus and to work with him on Horus' swordsmanship...
Grayhammer wakes up, a bit hung over and tries to piece together the evening. He remembers peeing on something. He looks at the letter, still groggy, and agrees to meet at Inn.
After a long day of hunting, Balsar comes back to Rangio with his haul. He stops in the local market where he sells some of it before heading to the Inn. When he walks in, he realizes he is the first to show and heads to a table in the back corner to wait.
To Balsar's surprise, Johan slips out of a corner and sits down next to Balsar. Johan looks to Balsar and says, "Greetings and thank you for coming. Please, let me buy you a drink while we wait for Leza and Greyhammer."
Balsar turns to Johan, and says, "Your welcome. I'm sure Greyhammer will be here soon, when I left he was sleeping in." Just than, Greyhammer strolls into the tavern and takes a seat next to Balsar, and acknowledges everyone with a simple, "Hello."
Johan looks at Greyhammer and says, "Greetings, would you care for a drink?" To the surprise of Johan, for dwarves are notorious for their drinking abilities, Greyhammer says, "No thank you, I'm still recovering." He knows this is odd behavior but does not dwell on it, there are more important things on hand. Johan just continues, slightly impatiently, "We are nearly all here, we just need Leza." Johan looks around but does not see Leza anywhere, "However, I feel I can get started."
Balsar, wondering if his fellow Paladin was even coming, and being slightly suspicious of Johan says, "We can wait if you need. Is there anyone else besides Leza?"
Johan stands up from the table and returns shortly with drinks for the table. Passing them out, he says to both Balsar and Greyhammer "I have learned a few things from the meeting with Damakos and Elroy, and have been wondering something since. The rest can make their own decisions, as can you, but my concern now lies primarily with the...well, to be blunt, the two of you." he motions at Greyhammer and Balsar.
Johan sits in silence for almost an uncomfortable amount of time but he is determined to out live his patience and let Greyhammer or Balsar make the next move.
Balsar starts feeling a bit uncomfortable, but the slight silence is not helping, his curiosity gets the best of him and he simply asks, "What about us?"
Johan decides to just not hold back, best to keep everyone off balance. He says, "Grok, where is he?"
Balsar replies, "I wish I knew. He ran away from us yelling 'run' and disappeared down the stairs. I heard some commotion before we all ran for our lives. I had hopes of seeing him back in Rangio."
Greyhammer, who seems unusually silent today, chimes in, "I hope he's ok. I've grown pretty attached to him."
Johan begins to wonder if Paladins and Clerics of Isara are even allowed to have attachments, he had heard that other sects of Clerics and Paladins do not allow themselves the luxury of attachments for they always seem to get in the way of duty. Which brings Johan to his next thought, and he wonders if that is what happened here. He places these thoughts in the back of his mind and just continues, "I know no one knows. Next point, Damakos....I know you don't trust him, and I know you have good reason. I've heard all of the story leading up to when I met you all.."
Balsar becomes impatient at even hearing the name, interrupts and says, "I really don't trust him in the least"
Johan not seeming phased by the interruption, continues the conversation saying, "Nor do I. But you know he is powerful, if he wanted us dead, he would have killed us on the road. So, Damakos doesn't want us dead, maybe he just wants us to shield the way into the Tower, but do the people who know Damakos want us dead? He can, and will charm people and take their freedom, do we really want that kind of man to potentially gain more power?"
Balsar Sits back in his chair, a little cockiness comes over him, Johan slightly grins at this, cockiness always brings people off balance, even if it is a cockiness from having a revelation. Balsar says, "What makes you think he is powerful?"
Johan, not sure if Balsar means that he has belief that Damakos is not powerful, or if he is trying to take Johan off balance. Johan remains calm, unmoving and says very matter-of-factly, "He walked into Elroy's with barely a scratch on him. What more proof do you need?"
Balsar is trying to figure out how Johan feels about Damakos but to not give too much away he tries to see how much Johan actually knows so he asks, "How would he gain this power?"
Johan replies, "We go back to the tower, we find out what Damakos is after, if possible, but we also look for Grok. And what greater glory for a paladin and cleric could there be than dying on the battlefield, giving their lives to vanquish evil."
Balsar slams down his ale, and almost growls in his response, "There is only one way I will go back in that tower and it sure as hell isn't going to be because Damakos needs help."
Johan is seemingly unmoved by this display of power, and says, "I don't know how, but I intend to find out, and if need be, stop him. That much power over the balance of life and death belongs to no mortal. If I'm wrong, and Damakos can be trusted, then you bring glory to Isara by slaying the undead in the tower, and have a change at finding your friend, who you LEFT BEHIND!" Johan sits back in his chair, crossing his arms, he changes to his usual calm and continues saying, "As for the rest of your group, I cannot speak, but this should greatly concern at least the two of you."
As Balsar stands up quickly, more quickly than someone of his size should be able to move, he exclaims, "That's exactly what Damakos said to me, how do I know now that you are not working with him and trying to bring us to our deaths!?"
Being the quicker, Johan moves with the speed and grace of the wind, and stands toe to toe with the tall Dragonborn and says, "You think me evil, then in the name of Isara, strike me down, here, now. I have already spoken with Leza, and he agrees with me. Would you call him evil too?"
Balsar seems to relax a bit, still noticeably on guard but with a less aggressive demeanor he says, "Look Johan, I have no real idea who you are or what you stand for. As far as I know, you have him under a spell to get him to do what you want?"
Johan who is unmoving begins to explain, "We go back to the tower. We come back with our honor or not at all." Faster than any eye can follow, Johan removes a dagger from his bracers and with blinding speed, jams the tip into the table. He than exclaims, "My life for the balance. Come or not, all you have to answer to is Isara." Johan gets up and leaves the table and walks out of the Inn.
Balsar yells after him, as he watches the human disappear into the crowd, "We aren't through here, I will summon you back here when a decision has been made!"
As Balsar finishes, he notices a very plain human who is trying to hide the fact that he was just close and listening to the conversation, trying a little to hard to back away, back into the crowd.
Leza leans against the wall after hearing no response to his knock at Balsar and Greyhammers door. After a couple minutes he notices Balsar approaching, he moves toward the Dragonborn and says, "Brother Balsar, might I speak with you?"
Balsar who seems slightly agitated, says in a very calm voice, "What's going on my brother?"
Leza continues, "I must apologize for missing our meeting. Brother Aelar wished to speak with me."
Balsar just says, "That's alright, it ended as quickly as it started."
Leza asks Balsar, "What do you make of my decision, and that of my brother, to return with Damakos, to the tower?"
Ballast wondering why he seemed to be one of the few that still had no intentions of going back to the Nightmare Tower, just kept it to himself and answered, "I don't trust Damakos and I have my suspicions about Johan"
Leza, seemingly ready to hear this statement says, "Do you doubt me, then?"
Balsar feeling as if he had to clarify says, "I have more my doubts on those two and their intentions."
Leza though, did not want to let the conversation go asks his Brother Paladin, "What do you make of my decision?"
Balsar finally concedes that this is going to happen, so he eases into Leza by starting with, "After how little we know about Damakos, I can't see why you would go."
Leza knowing that this needed to happen, to keep the unity of those that fight for Isara in balance answers with, "He kept me alive when he didn't have to. He asked if we would fight evil. That is our calling. I could not say no. And for that reason my brother goes with me."
Balsar does not seem satisfied with this answer asks the questions that need to be asked, "This is after he put a spell on you. What do you really know about this man? He saves you by putting you in danger, doesn't sound trust worthy to me. He won't even respond to us when we talk to him."
Leza is the youngest Paladin in Tirianda and being years behind Balsar in his training, says, "Just because you didn't like the answer doesn't mean he didn't speak."
Balsar amazed by the maturity and understanding says, "This is true, but for a guy that needs our help, you would think he would be a little more open to answering questions."
Leza just says matter-of-factly, "He did."
Balsar just shakes his head and says, "I respect your decision to go, I really need time to think. A lot has happened in the last few days, besides for Greyhammer, I will make sure you are the next to know my decision Brother."
Leza reminds Balsar as he starts to walk away, "This is your calling to fight evil. Yes, we may not survive. We may lose our lives. But can you rest knowing that we left a friend behind? Can you rest knowing you failed in your duty to protect all people?"
Balsar says what he truly suspected to be true by asking, "What if he made it out? How do we know he is even there still?"
Leza knowing that this could be true simply says, "We don't know he is still there. That is why we must return and look."
Balsar again walks toward his quarters, as he opens the door he looks toward Leza and says, "You will have your answer soon brother, I promise you this."
Leza calls as Balsar walks past, "If you do not come you are not worthy of being called a paladin. Paladin's think of others above themselves. You are not in this case."
Balsar turns, not looking back but stopped in his doorway he says, "We will talk soon." and closes the door behind him and begins immediately to pray and think.
